Merrie Meet & Solstice Blessings

The summer solstice marks the longest day of summer, it is the time at which the Sun (life-giver) is strongest over the powers of darkness.

On this day the sun is at its highest point in the sky which brings about the longest day and the shortest of nights.  Traditionally the solstice celebrations take place on the 21st June but the actual length of the solstice is in the region of 9 days (4 either side of the 21st.

It is the time of the year where all the seeds have been planted and marks the pause between the early leafy crops (lettuce and nettles etc) and the fruit crops, the vegetable crops and the grains.

The farming community still hold gatherings to celebrate at this time of year because it is representative of life itself.  Bonfires are lit on hilltops and in some areas it is still a custom to roll burning wheels down the hills to represent the decline of the sun.

Many pagans (and others) gather at Sacred Sites (Glastonbury and Stonehenge being probably the two most popular in the United Kingdom) to celebrate and greet the day.  A lot of people who celebrate in this way may leave a crystal, summer flowers or a special stone as a token of thanks to the Sun.
