Self Initiation (Part 1)
Let
me begin with a short apology concerning the tardiness of this post – since the
funeral of my Brother in Law I have been having great trouble catching up with
my blogging program, but hopefully now this one is complete I should be back on
track.
So
let us now take a look at Self Initiation
Years
ago it would have been impossible to do something like this because of all the
secret teachings that needed to be passed on and the rituals that needed to be
undertaken
However
with the growth of Wicca this has changed.
Wicca is a way of looking at the world around us, and of living within
it. It has ancient roots but it is also
highly relevant in today’s world and it can be practiced by anyone who is drawn
to its earth- based rituals.
If
you do find yourself drawn to the Wiccan path it is probably best to learn from
witches who follow the same ways, BUT it is not essential and you would be
perfectly justified to create your own ceremonies and pathways with a group of
friends and/or like minded individuals.
That
is not to say that you should not study the Wiccan path because if you wish to
practice then it makes sense to ensure that what you do is in keeping with the
tradition of the belief
However,
if you wish to make your practice more personal to you then you could devise a
set of simple rituals and practices. If
you work with it for a time you will realise the way you are being drawn – are
you being guided into the religion or the Craft?
Whichever
way you decide there is a self – initiation ritual that is something like a
“one size fits all” ceremony and this can be found among the pages of a book
entitled “Witchcraft For Tomorrow”
A
witch must pay continual attention to the small voice within him or herself by
giving it both the time and conditions to enable it to speak and be heard. This is what witchcraft is all about it is
the voice of the unconscious (both personal and collective) and the more we
perfect and develop our sensitivity, the more its messages will become clear. The more the voice of the Goddess or God
become clearer the better and greater is the understanding of what the words
mean.
For
the solo witch the practice of listening is possibly more important that it is
for those working together because a group’s members can discuss, compare and
if necessary adjust their interpretation.
It
is for the same reason that the solo witch must be particularly meticulous
concerning magickal ethics and psychic obedience.
The
path of a self initiated witch can contain a lot of pitfalls and perhaps the
hardest of these to deal with is loneliness.
It is for this reason that it is probably best, in the early learning stages,
to work with a partner or a like minded support group.
If
working with a partner (advisable in the early stages of developing yourself as
a witch) it is ideal that the partnership consist of a male and a female,
however in the world today it might be that you choose to work with a partner
of the same gender. If you feel
uncomfortable working in a partnership you may find it better to seek out and
join a group.
It
is essential that a self made witch keeps in touch with current thinking and
developments within the Craft and it is also advisable to become involved with
other pagans and witches in your local area but not until you have spoken to
members and ensured that they are genuine.
So
now as we draw this part to a close I would ask you to check back again next
week when I will go through a basic self initiation ritual.
Before
I finish I must reference the work that inspired and provided some of the
material for this article
A Witches’ Bible – The
Complete Witches Handbook by Janet + Stewart Farrar.
