Believing
that something is true just because it’s in a book
Books can be misleading or
inaccurate, plus they can also be filled with outright lies. This is especially true when they talking
about religious or spiritual beliefs.
Authors have been know to do this because they have not been required to
back up their claims in order to get big deals with publishers.
Sometimes the information contained
in them is false, whether by inaccuracy or a deliberate attempt to deceive the
readership. .
There are books which have some very
poor information in them, but that also have some things worth reading. There
are also some books that you may want to pick up at a library because they have
some good things to say about certain aspects of witchcraft..
I believe that it is best to read
everything you can and then make up your own mind finding what words for you.
It does not.
Read what you want, but read it with
a pinch of salt. Check facts, and talk to other witches (or followers of
whichever spiritual path) online, or face to face..
Overlooking
local resources in favour of fancy tools
There is no plant or rock or thing on
Earth that doesn’t hold some magical value.
The ones that are most commonly used
for magic are commonly used because they are easy to use, widely available,
offer perhaps more power.
Try not to get caught in the trap of
thinking that just because everyone else is using it, means you have to.
If you cannot find local lavender the
something growing in a neighbour’s hedge might do the same thing.
If you can obtain a field guide you
can begin working out what does what. There are many online groups that can help you
to identify the magical uses of most plants and rocks, You can sometimes work these out from what
the plant actually does naturally. Sweet smelling flowers will bring affection.
Thorny plants will cause harm or bring protection.
Not
respecting the basics
Shield. Ground. Centre. Cleanse.
However you do them, do not skimp or
cut corners on the basics. Make sure you are physically and spiritually clean,
that you are protected, that you have your feet on the ground and that you sit
within yourself, balanced.
The basics might be boring, but they’re essential.
Not
taking notes
Take notes about EVERYTHING you do –
ESPECIALLY when you do it for the first time.
Even if you creating a quick money
spell – make notes on what you did, when you did it? Include information about what was happening
in your life – how were your emotions? Were you ill? What were the planets
doing? What ingredients did you use?
Having a good
record means that you will not forget what spells you have done
and what the results were, it also means that you will not work against
yourself.
It means that you will not forget
that you did a love spell four years ago that you never actually “dispelled”
and therefore you will not spend months wondering why certain things are not
going to plan or happening in mysterious ways..
Note taking also means that you will know
what spells did or did not work, and then you can easily start working out WHY.
Did your protection spells fail when
you used bramble from a certain area? Well, now you know and you can change it
Wishing instead of
witching
Wishes are magic – but they are
unspecified, and they rarely work!
Make sure that you use specific
timeframes and requests, and that you back yourself up with power gained from
other sources where you can.
Make sure that your plants and rocks
are working together and not in conflict with each other. Open and close your
ritual space, if that is something that you do, and call upon whoever you think
may help.
Perform spells, don’t daydream about
what you would do better. Even spells done purely with the mind work better
when you do then correctly
Give magic the respect that it deserves – you would not
put uncooked carrots into a stew and then expect it to taste nice.
